The World Cup Knockouts Start Sunday: Round of 32 Explained (and What to Watch in Malaysia)

This is it. The group stage finishes tonight, and from Sunday 28 June the World Cup flips into the mode we all love best: knockout football. Win and you stay. Lose and you fly home. No second chances, no points to make up — just 90 minutes (or more) that decide everything.

But there's a twist this year. For the first time ever, there's a Round of 32. Here's what that means and how to follow it from Malaysia.

What Is the Round of 32?

Because this is the first 48-team World Cup, there's an extra knockout round that has never existed before. Instead of jumping straight to a Round of 16, we now start the knockouts with 32 teams.

Here's how the 32 qualifiers are decided:

  • The top 2 teams from each of the 12 groups — that's 24 teams.

  • Plus the 8 best third-placed teams across all the groups.

That last part is the new wrinkle. Finishing third in your group is no longer automatically the end — if you're one of the eight best third-place finishers, you sneak through. It keeps more teams alive deeper into the tournament, which means more drama right up to the final group whistle.

How Knockout Football Works

From here, every match must produce a winner:

  • If it's level after 90 minutes, you play 30 minutes of extra time (two 15-minute halves).

  • Still tied? It goes to a penalty shootout.

This is where heroes and heartbreak are made. No more playing for a draw — teams have to go for it.

The Road Ahead (All Dates)

  • Round of 32: Sunday 28 June – Friday 3 July

  • Round of 16: 4 – 8 July

  • Quarter-finals: 10 – 12 July

  • Semi-finals: 15 & 16 July

  • Third-place play-off: 18 July

  • THE FINAL: Sunday 19 July (early hours of Monday 20 July in Malaysia) at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey

The Tie Everyone in Asia Will Be Watching: Japan vs Brazil

Remember our post on the nine Asian teams? Here's the payoff. Japan have come through their group and drawn five-time world champions Brazil in the Round of 32. It's exactly the kind of test that shows how far Asian football has come — a side built on patient, decades-long grassroots development going toe-to-toe with the most successful nation in World Cup history.

Other big ties already confirmed include Netherlands vs Morocco — a rematch of their memorable recent meetings — and co-hosts Canada in action on home soil to open the round. As the last groups finish tonight, the rest of the bracket locks into place, including who lands the reward of facing Argentina.

Following It From Malaysia

Same rules as the group stage. Because the matches are played across the USA, Mexico and Canada, kick-offs in Malaysia mostly fall between midnight and late morning MYT — a mix of graveyard-shift classics and breakfast-friendly fixtures. There are three matches a day through the round, so there's always one worth setting an alarm for.

And you can still watch every single one for free: RTM and RTMKlik (free-to-air and free streaming), with Unifi TV carrying the full slate. Once the final group games end tonight, check RTMKlik or Unifi TV for the exact MYT kick-off of each tie before you commit your sleep.

Watch the Drama — Then Go Make Your Own

Knockout football is the best advertisement there is for the game. One match, everything on the line, penalties to decide it — it's impossible to watch and not want to get out and play.

So do both. Catch Japan take on Brazil, watch a shootout or two this week, then bring that same do-or-die energy to your own game. Our pitches and courts across the Klang Valley — Puchong, KSL Klang, Rimbayu, Bandar Seri Coalfields, Eco Grandeur and more — have evening and night slots open daily.

Book your pitch at metahub.my — round up the kakis and play.

Feeling inspired by the knockout format? You can run your own knockout night with your friends too — we covered exactly how to set one up in our last post. WhatsApp us and we'll help you sort the pitch and the bracket.
